Jeff Burton was born on June 29, 1967 in South Boston, Virginia. He is currently married and lives in Huntersfield, North Carolina. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, NASCAR driver Ward Burton. He started racing more than thirty years ago at seven years old in a go-kart. He won two Virginia go-kart championships.
In 1984, Jeff Burton started racing stock cars. He won six late model races in 1986 and seven races in 1988. Burton started racing in the Busch Series in 1988. He had his first win in Martinsville in 1990.
In 1993, Burton started racing in NASCAR's Winston Cup Series at New Hampshire. He ended his day early with a crash on lap 86. In 1994, he raced full time in the cup series and won Rookie of the Year. In 1996, Jeff Burton started driving for Jack Roush and finished thirteenth in points. The next year things took off for his racing career. He finished top five in the points for four years in a row. He started driving for Richard Childress Racing in 2005. After a 175 race winless streak, he won at Dover in 2006.
Burton was a contender for The Chase last year (2006) where he finished seventh in the standings. He started this year (2007) very well. He led the point standings for a short time at the beginning of the season. He is in The Chase this year with one win, nine top fives and sixteen top tens.
